AI Value

How to tell if AI is helping.

◷ 5 minPracticalStrategy

What is it?

AI value is the useful improvement created by AI. It may be saved time, better quality, faster review, fewer repeated questions, stronger first drafts, or better access to information. Value is not the same as excitement. A team can be excited about AI and still get no real benefit.

Why it matters

Executives need to separate novelty from results. If AI only creates more meetings, more checking, and more confusion, it has not created value. The best AI use cases make a specific part of work easier to measure or easier to improve.

How it works

Pick one value signal before running the use case. For example: time saved per task, fewer manual steps, faster response time, better first draft quality, fewer support tickets, or faster document review. Compare the process before and after AI. If the benefit is not visible, the use case needs adjustment or should be dropped.

InputWork or question enters the tool.
ProcessThe AI or team follows a pattern.
OutputThe result is reviewed before use.

Analogy

Think of a new kitchen appliance. It is useful if it helps you cook faster, waste less food, or make better meals. It is not useful just because it has many buttons. AI value works the same way. The feature list is not the outcome.

Example usage

A legal team might measure how quickly first drafts are prepared. A support team might measure how often agents find the right answer. A manager might measure whether meeting summaries reduce follow up confusion. Pick the value signal that matches the work.

How to use this

Use one sentence: AI is valuable here if it improves X without creating unacceptable Y. For example, AI is valuable here if it reduces summary time without creating factual errors that take longer to fix.

Common mistake

The common mistake is counting usage instead of value. More AI prompts do not mean better work. A team can use AI heavily and still produce worse decisions.
